Nancy Ratzloff's Teacher Reflections
March 27th, 2000:

This was the first day of the first class to start the project! They were introduced to Ernest Whiteman via the Internet and then they were introduced to his sculpture! Wow! The kids were so good about talking about the piece. It really drew them in. They could talk about the elements of art in describing the piece and I could hardly get them to stop talking about the symbolism... They really got into it! They had lots of "creative" ideas on the symbolism of the artwork. We shared some of the comments on the web board and it was fun to see what the other kids were thinking.
At the end of the class students were given the "Symbol Detective" sheet but we did not have much time to work on it... They dug right in then when some of them got to the other side of the sheet it was interesting to watch their faces as they tried to interpret the Native American symbols. More time will be devoted to the "Symbol Detective" sheet during our next class!
