An early example of historic preservation (!), Bennett ostensibly removed the glyphs from the site to save them from vandalism, thus destroying both the spatial interrelationships of the glyphs and the integrity of the site. Note also the use of chalk to highlight the petroglyphs, a practice disdained by contemporary rock art researchers; in deference to the sensibilities of the time, obviously creet penises recorded by Lewis were deleted from several of the anthropomorphic glyphs (cf.Winchell 1911:Plate VIII).
