This is tradition that the Mexican people do when a young girl reaches the age of fifteen. This is a story of that tradition written by Sandra who is an eighth grade student in Mrs. Monson's art class in the Danube Middle School, Danube, Minnesota. She is of Mexican heritage and has written this story in her own words without any corrections made by a teacher.

In the picture Sandra is shown holding a pink dress which is the customary color that the young girl would wear to show her purity. She would be carrying flowers, perhaps have flowers in her hair, and be wearing jewelry which would traditionally be a gift from her godparents. On this special day she is very blessed by her family and her church.

Quinceañera
(15th birthday)

A quinceañera is a celebration entering womenhood like you anglos have a sweet 16 we have a quinceañera meaning our fifiteenth birthday. Giving thanks to God for letting us living fifteen years. We go to church for our blessing like as our baptism but now at age fifteen. After mass we have a reception where the quinceañera says thank you and enjoys the celebration. After the reception is a dance where all the people who helped have fun and enjoy the "fiesta." (Ladies) damas are the ages the fifteenth birthday girl went through. The ages usually start from four to fourteen. They represent her childhood through womanhood. The damas are usually with the chambelanes which are the guys who just dance and be with the damas.

We get presents like every other party but we get godparents for a watch, ring, bracelet, and earrings. These are gifts that signify our womanhood. The last doll is a lost doll we get from our childhood and it dosen't really mean it's your last doll.

This is a cultural thing from our Aztec people This is a great celebration. This party is made by the parents.

La gente Mexicana celebran las quinceañeras cuando las niñas cumplen sus 15 años, dandole' gracias a Dios por haberlas dejado llegar a esa edad tan anelada por las jovencitas,y otra, para presentarlas a la sociedad como unas señoritas. Se organiza la fiesta por los padres de la quinceañera. Se celebra una misa en honor de la quinceañera. Como los Americanos hacen esta el 16, que le dicen "sweet 16th". Tambien, durante la misa te bendisen como el bautismo. Despu'es de la bendico'n y que termine la misa, llevan a la quinceañera y las damas a dar la yuelta en el pueblo y despues van y nos dejan al salon donde hay llegamos, ponen la musica. Las damas y chamberlanes tienen que pasar al frente del salon y decir los nombres. Despues todos nos sentamos y nos juntamos con la pareja y bailamos. Despu'es el Papa y la quinceañera tienen que bailar solos, despues la fiesta comiensa pero primero comemos y luego es el baile. Las damas son las niñas que acompañan a la quinceañera de los 4 a 14 años que representan la niñas. Las damas van acompañadas por muchachos que son los chamberlanes tambien les regalan regalos como si fuera una fiesta regular, pero les regalan como un anillo, una pulsera y aretes y el reloj. Estos son regalos que representan entrando a señoritas y tambien les regalan una muñeca, dicen que es la ultima muñeca. Es la muñeca que les dan para que recuerden su niñes. Mi prima Josefina (Josie) va tener una el, Mayo 10 de este' 1997. Pero' como ella tiene muchos niños chiquitos. Latallan mucho para practicar, pero nada mas hubieran agarrado damas mayores. Hay como sinco parejas grandes, y el resto son puras chiquitas y chiquitos. Ahora estos dias que fuimos a practicar¡Nomabre! parecia ma's como' una fiesta para niños, andaban todos salte y salte y gritando.
