- Performance of musical accompaniment to theater production

Task Description:

Overview: You will perform music to support or enhance the expressive qualities of your group's theater production. Your music will be created or selected, prepared and then presented during your group's theater production. Each member of your group will choose a musical part based on the evaluation of their personal music skills. (Note to teacher: See Special Notes concerning music portfolio and Music Skills Self-Analysis to be done prior to this assignment.)

Creating or selecting your music:

1. Your group may choose music you already know, music you wish to learn, or music you create to support or enhance your theater production. Your group may add one or more musical numbers to your theater production. Group members may perform together, individually, or both. The music should fit the significant information, insight, or aspect of your community, region, or state which you are trying to communicate to your audience.

2. Discuss your theater production with the members of your group in order to determine what mood or expressive quality you want in each of the five scenes of your productions. Use your Scene Script Sheet to make your judgments about the mood of each individual scene. Brainstorm ideas for musical ideas for musical accompaniment on the Expreesive Qualities chart.

When your group has completed the brainstorming session for songs that would support or enhance each scene, complete the Planning Guide and then conference with your teacher.

Rehearse your musical number(s)

2. After the conference with your teacher, rehearse your music so that each member can effectively perform his or her part. As you rehearse, keep in mind that your primary goal is to help communicate the intended expressive qualities or mood of the scene in your theater production. Get feedback from your teacher and other groups in your class about the musical quality and expressiveness of your performance. Refine your musical performance until you are comfortable and satisfied with your performance.

Feedback Checklist for Task 3

Special Notes:

1. To achieve the music portion of the Artistic Creativity, Performance and Expression standard, the student would need to create an electronic portfolio of individual musical performances and complete a self-evaluation of musical skills. Those tasks can be found in the Intermediate Artistic Creativity, Performance and Expression package entitled Music and Me, which is available on the Graduation Standards Web site of the Minnesota Department of Children, Families and Learning.
